Dr N.K. Bansal, SINTEX chair professor, CEPT University

Professor N K.Bansal, Ex-Vice Chancellor, SMVD University, is a former Director and Senior Professor Centre for Energy Studies at IIT Delhi. Presently he is consultant to the Ministry of Renewable Energy Govt. Of India and SINTEX chair professor CEPT University Ahemdabad. He is a renowned Energy Expert with international repute in areas of Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy and Energy Economics and Planning. Professor Bansal has guided many Ph.D. scholars and has written extensively in the area of his expertise as evident from his 20 books, more than 300 papers, several articles and state of art reports. He is the recipient of Amity Academic Excellence Award 2008, Rajiv Gandhi Shiromani Award 2007, Life Achievement Award in Education 2005, Pioneer in Renewable Energy by World Renewable Energy Network 1998 and Dr. CM Jacob Gold Medal 1995.Holder of Alexander von Humboldt and DAAD fellowships Professor Bansal has lectured extensively in Germany, USA, UK and Sweden. His works on Climatic Zones and Passive Building Design is used extensively by researchers and practitioners in India and abroad. Professor Bansal has been consultant to USAID, German Technical Cooperation Society, and Industries in India and abroad. He has been a member of Scientific Advisory Committee of a German state as well as Board Member of Solar Institute Juelich, Germany and presently on the Advisory Board member of an European project on Future Climate being Coordinated by Denmark Engineering Association.

Professor Bansal is an educationist and scientist of repute in the field of Energy Science and Technology. He took over as Vice Chancellor of SMVDU at a time when the institution was lacking academic vision, had fragile infrastructure and needed stability. Within a short span after his joining, he introduced an academic pattern with complete transparency and a teaching system, which forces a student to learn beyond class room teaching. Today, the University is well established with students and faculty from all over the country known for academic excellence, world class infrastructure and exemplary discipline. Scholars, from aboard as well as with in the country, keep visiting the University. He kept his academic activities by starting an M.Tech. (Energy Management) programme in the University for employed engineers and scientists and took lectures himself as well as trained the faculty in this subject for continuation of the programme. He is also guiding Ph.D. students along with his work as Vice Chancellor of the University. He undertook international cooperation by signing MoUs with National and International Institutions.Gen. Sinha, in his book "GUARDING INDIA'S INTEGRITY", has described Professor Bansal a man of tremendous drive, dedication and vision. According to him, the credit of translating his dream of establishing world class technical University goes to professor Bansal.

Prof. Rajan Rawal, Executive Director

Rajan Rawal is Executive Director of Centre for Advanced Research in Building Science and Energy (CARBSE), He also served as head of the undergraduate program at Design at Faculty of Design, CEPT University, Ahmedabad INDIA. He is a registered architect, graduated from School of Architecture, Institute of Environmental Design, Vallabh Vidyanagar. He worked with Vastu Shilpa Foundation for Studies and Research in Environmental Design before joining Faculty of Design, CEPT University, Ahmedabad. He teaches design and construction courses as part of undergraduate program & energy efficient built environment at post graduate level. His work emphasis is on 'energy performance of buildings and cities' and 'architectural science education'.

He is involved in research and development activities at CEPT University and coordinates the activities of CARBSE. He is also serving with "Gujarat Public Service Commission" as an architect expert. He is member of technical core committee for benchmarking of building, Window Labelling Program committee at Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Member of National Building code BIS -CED 46 on Sustainable Buildings, Technical Committee member for GRIHA rating system, and technical expert at India Green Building Council.Prof. Rawal is recognized trainer for building simulation tools and IGBC authorized evaluator for LEED certification rating for commercial buildings, and Green Homes. He is founder member secretary of India Chapter of International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA) and also serves at IBPSA world committee. He has number of research papers, technical reports and three books to his credits. Prof Rawal is currently engaged in designing and constructing one of the first 'Net-Zero Energy' building in India a living laboratory. He lives in Ahmedabad. He is recognise ECBC expert and trainer.

Dr. Yashkumar Shukla, Technical Director (Energy Systems)

Dr. Yashkumar Shukla is Technical Director (Energy Systems) at Centre for Advanced Research in Building Science and Energy (CARBSE). He has more than fifteen years of international experience in building energy-efficiency research and serves as a lead on several energy-efficiency research projects at CARBSE. His current research includes calibration of simulation models, performance characterization of envelope and HVAC systems, net-zero energy buildings, and development of next-generation control algorithms. He has extensive experience in the building management systems, building energy analysis, HVAC system operation, component characterization facilities, development of test chambers, building simulation modeling, and energy efficiency control algorithms. His prior work experience also includes providing technical support in designing and implementing commercial and residential energy-efficiency programs throughout the US.

He has completed Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from Nirma Institute of Technology, Ahmedabad; Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A & M University, College Station; and Doctor of Philosophy from CEPT University, Ahmedabad. He possesses several professional certifications including certified measurements and verification professional (CMVP), Home energy rating system (HERS), GRIHA Trainer, and ECBC Master Trainer. He has also served on technical committees at various national and international forums. He has published more than twenty peer-reviewed academic papers.

Asha B. Joshi, Administrative Manager

Asha B. Joshi serves as Administrative Manager at CARBSE. She holds a Masters degree in Law with specialization in Environmental Law and International Legal Order from Gujarat University. She was awarded gold medal for her performance during her graduation from Saurashtra University. With working experience of 11 years in area of administration, publications and human resource management, she joined CARBSE in 2009. She worked with Icfai Business School, Research Centre, Ahmedabad before joining current position; she was associated with International Development Enterprises (India).

Agam Shah, Senior Research Associate

Agam Shah is a Senior Research Associate at Centre for Advanced Research in Building Science and Energy (CARBSE). He is an architect with graduation from The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Vadodara, India. He specialized in the field of Sustainability, Green Building Design and Simulations from The University of Nottingham, UK. While a student in the UK, he won a national student competition (Hermes RE-Design Challenge - Best Technical Thinking) requiring proposals for improving sustainability of existing commercial buildings in the UK. Agam is interested in research and development of Integrated Environmental Design approach/guidelines/codes achieved through a combination of traditional wisdom, innovative sustainable practices and the latest technological advancements. He is currently working on design and construction of NZEB (Net Zero Energy Building) at CEPT University. He is part of the project team developing online tools for Dynamic U-value Calculations and Climate Analysis. He is preparing a Thermal Property Database of construction materials used in India. He is also working on Energy Benchmarking of Buildings in India. The work includes preparing and analyzing the database containing building specifications and energy consumption to determine the EPI (Energy Performance Index).

Agam started his career as an architect for over two years. After completing post-graduation, he worked as a Research Associate at The University of Nottingham mainly on two projects – 'Retrofit for the Future' (RFP) and iSPACE(e). RFP dealt with developing and analyzing strategies to reduce energy consumption (and CO2 emissions) of existing UK houses through PHPP (Passive House Planning Package) and SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) analysis. iSPACE(e) project analyzed the potential of integrating e-learning technologies in architectural education to teach environmental design and sustainability principles. He was also involved in teaching Master's students at the University. In India, he joined Environmental Design Solutions (EDS), New Delhi as a Green Building Analyst. Here, he worked for two years on providing green building design assistance to planners/architects for IIT campuses at Mandi and Jodhpur. He also worked on Certification projects for Green Building Rating Systems (LEED and GRIHA) as well as Energy and Daylight Simulations, Facade Optimization, CFD Analysis, etc. He is recognise ECBC expert and trainer.

Mona Galsar, Visual communication Expert

Mona Galsar works as a Visual Communication Expert at Center for Advance Research in Building Science and Energy (CARBSE), CEPT University. She has done Masters in Mass Communication and Journalism from Gujarat University and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Gujarat University. She also holds diploma in Architectural Assi. From Girls Polytechnic Ahmedabad. She has done certificate course in multimedia. She has joined CARBSE as Visual Communication Expert in May 2011. She has more than 10 years' experience in Architecture & Graphic Design field. She is able to work with various visual media & multimedia related software. Prior to joining CARBSE she has worked as a web Designer in CMMI level 5 Company. Her area of interest includes using graphic design technology and computer software to produce designs and layouts for print & digital media.

Jayamin Patel, Assistant Laboratory Manager

Jayamin D.Patel holds M.Sc. degree in Physics from Saurashtra University. He joined Centre for Advanced Research in Building Science and Energy as Laboratory Technician in October 2015. Prior to joining CARBSE he was working as a Technical Officer (R&D) in Sahajanand Laser Technology Limited, Gandhinagar. Before this he worked as Laboratory Technician in Building Energy Performance Limited, CEPT University, Ahmedabad. Prior to this he was working as a Technical Assistant at Physical Testing Division of Ahmedabad Textile Industries Research Association (A.T.I.R.A.) Ahmedabad. His areas of interest are Atmospheric Science, Fluid Mechanics, Solid State Physics, Material Science, Thermodynamics, Optics, Programmable Logic Controller and Computational Methods.

Jigar B. Patel, Laboratory Supervisor

Jigar B. Patel holds B.Sc. degree in Physics from Gujarat University. He joined Centre for Advanced Research in Building Science and Energy as Laboratory Technician in March 2012. Prior to joining CARBSE he worked as Technical Assistant in Perfect Utilities (NABL Accredit Lab for Calibration of Instrument), Ahmedabad. Before This He worked as Technical Assistant in Physical Testing Division of Ahmedabad Textile Industries Research Association (A.T.I.R.A.) Ahmedabad. His areas of interest are Atmospheric Science, Optics and Computational Methods.

Arjun Desai, Research Assistant

Arjun is a research assistant at Centre for Advanced Research Building Science and Energy (CARBSE) CEPT University. He has completed his M.Tech in Building Energy Performance from CEPT University and holds Bachelor of engineering degree in Civil from GTU. He aspires to focus on improving the Energy Efficiency in buildings through research and their application. As a part of his research thesis, He has developed a tool which shows the effectiveness of passive strategies in reducing the cooling energy required by buildings in 59 Indian cities. He also also has extensive building physics knowledge and learned building energy simulation software, lighting and daylighting simulation software.

Himani Pandya, Research Assistant

Himani Pandya is a Research Assistant at Centre for Advanced Research in Building Science and Energy (CARBSE), CEPT University. She has completed her Masters in Habitat Management from CEPT University. She holds a Master's degree in Information Technology from K. S. School of Business Management, Gujarat University. She has two years of work experience in operations and research areas across branding and advertising field. Prior to joining CARBSE, she has worked as an Academic Associate at CEPT University. Her areas of interest are research and development leading to sustainable solutions in built environment.

Aniket Deore, Research Assistant

Aniket Deore is a Research Assistant at Centre of Advance Research in Building Sciences and Energy (CARBSE), CEPT University. He has Completed his M.Tech in Thermal Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (ISM), Dhanbad. He also holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering From University of Pune. Then he worked as a CFD Application Engineer at Contravolts Infotech Pvt. ltd, Bangalore (Subsidiary of Cradle-CFD Japan (MSC Software)) were he worked on various projects such as Thermal Stacking, Basement ventilation, Thermal Comfort of human in Bank, Thermo-regulation JOS model etc. His Domain of interest includes Thermal comfort, Building Energy Simulation, Low Energy Cooling, HVAC, Radiant cooling, Solar Energy. He is presently working on "CFD Analysis of Thermal Comfort Chamber with JOS model at varying environmental Condition".

Kartikay Sharma, Research Assistant

Kartikay Sharma is a research assistant at Centre for Advanced Research Building Science and Energy (CARBSE) CEPT University. He completed his Post Graduation in M. Tech in Building Energy Performance from CEPT University and holds Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil from GTU, Gujarat.His over-all goal is to become key individual to promote and execute energy efficiency drivers for the nation. As part of the studies he conducted a research on "India's Path to low carbon building stock: Estimating energy savings potential for commercial building stock". During his masters he has also extensively learned Building energy simulation software, building physics, macro-level energy efficiency and extensive data-analysis. His current area of interests includes macro-level Energy policy, building energy stock modelling, optimization of energy simulation work-flow using different simulation software, developing excel/macro based tools for energy analysis, data visualization, Passive design optimization, whole building design, affordable energy conservation measures for mass housing, Demand-response for peak load management and smart-metering.

Deepta Mishra, Research Assistant

Deepta Mishra is a Research Assistant at Centre for Advanced Research in Building Science and Energy, CEPT University, Ahmedabad. He has completed his B.tech in Instrumentation and Electronics Engineering from BPUT, Odisha followed by M.tech from Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal, Karnataka with Control Systems specialization.As a part of his post-graduation thesis work, he has worked as a research intern at Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore. As a research intern, his responsibility was to develop a mathematical model for a soft actuator and design an active control system for Prototype Segmented Mirror Telescope ( PSMT) under development at IIA Bangalore. Prior to joining CARBSE, He has one year of teaching experience in the subjects like Analog Electronics, Control Systems, Signals and Systems. Apart from teaching, he also worked as an associate analyst in a market research and consulting firm where his work was focused on doing secondary research related to metal mining market and commodity production analysis. He has two international conference proceedings and two international journal publications (SCOPUS index and SCIE index journals) in his name. He has keen interest in the areas of Control Systems, Data Analytics, Electronics and Electrical Measurements, Instrumentation and Process Control.

Sachin S., Research Assistant

Sachin is a Research Assistant at the Centre for Advanced Research in Building Science and Energy (CARBSE), CEPT University. He has completed his Master's degree in Regional and Urban Planning with Infrastructure Planning Specialization from CEPT University, Ahmedabad. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE) - Mysuru, Karnataka.As a part of his Post Graduation thesis, he has worked on "Reviewing the Swachh Survekshan framework for assessing the cities based on Cleanliness". The study majorly focused on understanding the effectiveness of the Swachh Survekshan framework for assessing the cities based on cleanliness. Further, the study also focused on analyzing the impact of the Swachh Survekshan framework on the governing bodies (ULBs and State governing bodies) towards improving their service deliverance for the citizens. Apart from this, as a part of his studio project, he has worked on assessing the technical and financial efficiency of the Water Distribution Stations. This study majorly focused on demonstrating the potential usage of SCADA data and proposal of suitable interventions for enhancing the efficiency of the water distribution stations thereby leading to a more efficient water supply network. He is currently working on incorporating the municipal energy services in the iNtelligent Urban Model for Built environment Energy Research (iNUMBER).

Tithi Soladhara, Research Assistant

Tithi Soladhara has completed her Masters in Habitat (Urban) Management from CEPT University, Ahmedabad. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Environmental science from St. Joseph's college of arts and science - Bengaluru, Karnataka.As the part of her post-graduation dissertation, she has worked on "Urban public space management outlook of Ahmedabad's parks and gardens - a framework to evaluate performance of the public parks".The study focused on understanding the management practices, aesthetics, sociability, accessibility, comfort and image of the parks in the city and grading their performance based on these indicators contributing to the management efficiency of the parks in the city of Ahmedabad. As a part of academics/studio projects at CEPT University, she worked on services operations of Regional Transport Office at Gandhinagar with focus on digital processes for licensing facility. Her areas of interests include research in the urban built environment.

Greesha Gowri, Research Assistant

Greesha Gowri is a Research Assistant at Centre for Advanced Research in Building Science and Energy, CEPT University, Ahmedabad. She has completed her B.Arch from RV School of Architecture in Bangalore and MSc in Environmental Design from the University of Bath, UK with two scholarships sponsored by the University.She has 4 years of experience as an architect in Bangalore with an architectural design firm and independently as a consultant on large and small scale projects. Her dissertation during masters was a review to evaluate the feasibility of Geo-exchange cooling for multi-story residential buildings in India. The methodology included understanding technical principles and critical factors associated with the technology in addition to local energy consumption patterns. The data was used to define a reference within IES VE to generate base case energy consumption and emission figures. Her areas of interest include sustainable building design to primarily optimize energy use without compromising occupant comfort.

Vishnu Vardhan, Research Assistant

Vishnu Vardhan is a Research Assistant at Center for Advanced Research in Building Science and Energy (CARBSE), CEPT University. He holds a graduate degree (B.E.) in Mechanical with specialisation in Energy Engineering from VIT University, Vellore. During undergraduate studies, he worked on multiple research-based projects relevant to the themes of climate and building sustainability. His research primarily included the analysis of particulate matter deposition on heritage facades through experimental and computational methods, the estimation of thermal properties of organic facades in an urban context, etc. The results of these projects were published internationally. After completing his degree, he joined the Centre for Scientific Research/Studio Naqshbandi at Auroville, where he worked as a Building Energy Analyst on the U.S.-India Joint Center for Building Energy Research & Development (CBERD) project. His responsibilities included technical documentation and data analysis of the passive design strategies across seven naturally ventilated buildings in the warm-humid climate. He also conducted component level thermal monitoring in a building as a part of an independent study which focussed on highlighting the performance of sustainable building fabrics.

At CARBSE, his responsibilities entail the study of globally developed personal comfort systems, the documentation of appropriate material selection and design strategies for climate responsive buildings in the warm-humid tropics, and more. His career objective is to develop scientific yet lucid communication methods in the field of building sustainability by inter twining the disciplines of engineering, architecture, and economics.
